Car and Driver did a performance comparison of the Corvette Z06 vs. Porsche 911 GT3 and the Lotus Exige (S Third). The Corvette was the clear winner in this test. The Porsche came in second place and the Lotus third.
A drastic structural change was made with the Corvette Z06, replacing the steel frame with an aluminum frame. This aluminum frame makes the Corvette Z06 considerably lighter then it's prior steel framed predecessor.
In another effort to reduce the weight of the Z06 the fenders are made out of carbon fiber. Wider rear fenders are added to permit the wider tires needed to deal with the Z06s increased engine power.
The Corvette Z06 is the first vehicle that reaches over 500 horse power to avoid having to pay the Gas Guzzler tax. Not only this, in 2006 the Z06 had the honor o being the Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500 official pace car.
Some changes have been made to the later models, such as better suspension, added manual six speed transmissions, improved steering racks, and more.
